. good friday afternoon. thank you for joining us for the news at noon. i'm mike hydeck. the big reveal today at the national zoo. we're learning more about the newest member of the family there. the panda's cub identity is

revealed. pandamonium. is it a boy or a girl? >> reporter: are you ready? it's a boy and tian tian is the daddy. he's the big stud of the day. he's in fact fathered three successful and thriving panda bears. as you know, tai shan and bao bao and now this little guy. unfortunately three other cubs didn't survive in the last three years but we want to talk about the surviving boy cub this morning. herevideo from the national zoo, a very vocal six-day old panda cub with mei xiang. the panda team says it is doing very, very well. the panda house and fans have been waiting in anticipation of this big announcement. >> first i'd like to tell but the thriving cub. the panda cub is male. >> reporter: we just learned the new panda is a boy.

>> i have a boy. >> reporter: he's just a tiny bit cute and so are the pandas. both twin cubs are boys. they were fraternal twins. we also learned about the cub that didn't survive. preliminary tests suggest complications from what's called aspiration pneumonia which means it choked on some food while it was either bottle fed or tube fed which caused an infection in the lungs. back to the brand new panda cub. if you're waiting to see this cub, you'll have to wait until january. and it still doesn't have a name. they're following tradition, bao bao, the big sis was named when she turned 100 days old. we'll have to wait a little longer for that. they did a whole contest on it, too. we may be able to be involved in the naming of this brand new 6 day old cub in the future. at the national zoo, surae chinn, wusa9. >> thank you, surae.

the man charged in a fatal metro stabbing will have to undergo further mental health evaluations. a judge says there was not enough mental information to decide if jasper spires is competent to stand trial. spires is the man accused of stabbing and killing 24-year- old kevin sutherland over the independence day weekend at a metro station. he is charged now with felony murder. the judge has ordered spires to undergo a full mental evaluation. the details on which will be revealed coming up in october. from sky 9 we're looking at the scene of a stabbing in frederick. one person is in critical condition now after a stabbing which took place on al ban court at 8:00 this morning. the victim was transported to shock trauma in baltimore. another person was injured as well, but they were not stab wounds from that incident. a cyclist is dead after being hit by a car on a busy bethesda road this morning. it happened on massachusetts avenue at osceola road at about 7:30 this morning. the cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. the driver did stay at the scene to help police with the

investigation. another day of mourning in roanoke, virginia for the two journalists shot dead on live television this week. virginia governor terry mcauliffe is at wdbj right now at the studios in roanoke to talk to the staff in private after alison parker and adam ward were killed on air by a former coworker. meanwhile last night at the tv station, friend, family, even strangers gathered to honor them at a candlelight vigil. many who attended the vigil said they had been watching the station on the air when the shooting occurred and that tragedy hit very close to home. we have learned more about the services for photo journalist adam ward. they will be held on tuesday. the ceremony will be held at first baptist church in roanoke. the woman who survived the attack is listed in good condition at roanoke hospital. vicki gardner had surgery yesterday. her husband says she lost a kidney and part of her colon and faces months of recovery. her husband was also watching

tv when the shooting happened. let's switch over to good news. the sunshine is here and beautiful weather once again. meteorologist erica grow has a look at the forecast as we head toward the weekend. >> you might call it beautiful. i sometimes call it boring so i'm going to switch my focus to the tropics. we are still keeping a close eye on tropical storm erika just to give you a vantage point if you're not familiar with this part of the world. this is south america down here. you see haiti, the dominican republic. also protection -- also puerto rico here. the storm is entering the open waters of the caribbean but it is not expected to continue the trajectory through the very warm waters. it's expected to make more of a northwesterly turning so that is actually going to help prevent it from getting stronger. because once it heads over the terrain, it loses some of its energy. it loses a big moisture source and it loses the heat source from the ocean so that prevent it is from getting stronger. it's expected to make the northerly turn toward the

peninsula of florida as we head into next workweek bringing heavy rain but at least it looks like it won't become a hurricane but this track is still a little bit uncertain so we're going to keep a very close eye on that for you. back to you. >> thank you. florida is under a state of emergency right now. residents there are bracing for a storm that could become as erica says a hurricane next week. trite now tropical storm erika is battering puerto rico with torrential rage. it's expected to hit the dominican republic as well. >> reporter: tropical storm erika hit puerto rico friday. the storm with wind up to 50 miles per hour knocked down trees and power lines on the southern part of the island. the storm caused deadly flooding and mud slides thursday on the caribbean island of dominica as rivers overflowed into the streets. the building collapwater crashed into its foundation. erika could intensify into a category 1 hurricane by the time it reaches the east coast of the united states.

>> here's where it gets tricky. as we head into late sunday into monday, possibly tropical storm erika moving across monday morning and riding up the spine of the state of florida. >> reporter: florida has declared a state of emergency as it gets ready for what could be its first hurricane in a decade. a local concrete company is giving out free sandbags to residents as they prepare. residents are taking advantage of this. more than a thousand bags have been given out. >> just in case we're getting ready because it says that it will come with lots of water. >> reporter: and crews have been setting up pumps to keep the water from flooding miami beaches. cbs news, west miami. hard to believe that tomorrow marks ten years since hurricane katrina slammed into the gulf coast. the gulf coast will remember the massive storm with a look at how far they have come in the last ten years. officials have been highlighting the rebuilding efforts and the economic resurgence for that region.

the hurricane killed nearly 2,000 people and forced more than a million out of their homes. former president george w. bush is in new orleans today. he will be at the same high school where he marked the first anniversary of hurricane katrina. the visit comes just one day after obama was in the city. happening right now, police in prince george's county are searching for a convicted sex offender who escaped from a state hospital. 49-year-old james alexander norris walked away from a court ordered home visit in hyattsville. several organizations are involved in the search, including maryland state police and prince george's county police. and police in annapolis need your help identifying this manual. he's a suspect in a sexual assault from july 18. they say it took place on duke of gloucester street. the suspect is described as a black man in his late 20s, muscular, clean shaven with short hair. two d.c. neighborhoods rocked by violence overnight. police say there were three shootings in southwest and southeast.

all four male victims are expected to rvsuive. so n faro arrests have enbe made in any of the cases. the man accused of killing his girlfriend's one-year-old son will be in a prince george's county court this afternoon for a bond hearing. he was arrested after a child fowas und unresponsive inside a house in riverdale on august 1. he's charged with first-degree murder and child abuse. still to come on the news noon, dying to get out. as the migrant crisis continues to grip europe, arrests are made after a truck full of bodies is discovered now. next, this virginia teenager finds out how long he'll be behind bars

major departure point for migrants trying to reach italy. hundreds of people have been on board when the boat overturned. there are reports that about 1500 people were rescued, however. three people are in custody in austria now suspected of taking part in another migrant tragedy. about 70 migrants were found dead in a refrigerator truck abandoned on a highway between vienna and budapest. some of the victims are believed to be syrians. california community is pretty upset after learning a member of the manson family might be released from prison soon. chris davis has been behind bars for 43 years now. now the state parole board is recommending he be free. davis was convicted along with cult leader charles manson in two murders back in 1969. it will be up to california's governor jerry brown to make the final decision on whether or not he lets that 72-year-old go free. brown rejected his parole a year ago saying davis is still dangerous. a drunk man behind the

wheel of a massive tractor- trailer and a car with a family in his way. dramatic video out of dallas, texas, caught from a goose station security camera. the truck crashes into the car. the driver flees the scene. luckily the family inside the car survived to tell their story and get that drunk driver arrested. the guy was stumbling, falling. >> first the truck driver didn't have insurance -- of course the truck driver didn't have insurance leaving the family with the cost of medical bills and repairs to their car. check out this. jaw dropping video caught on camera. a group of people attack a young man right on top of a d.c. fire truck. this happened yesterday afternoon on 7th and alabama in southeast when the truck was stopped at a red light. police say the young man was running from his attackers. he saw the fire engine and climbed aboard. the attackers followed him and they kept punching. police made arrests. the young victim was treated at

the scene and let go. first alert weather time. meteorologist erica grow is here. so beautiful outside. >> yeah, it's another great day. >> watching the big storm, too. >> four beautiful days in a row. we are continuing, yes, to keep an eye on what is now tropical storm erika. it will probably remain tropical storm status because like i said at the beginning of the show, it has impedimentses that prevent it -- impediments that prevent it from becoming a hurricane. let's start with the michael complain son weather cam. a nice shoft the washington monument. lots and lots -- shot of the washington monument. lots and lots of sunshine. sunshine, low humidity and comfortable temperatures. it's sticking with us again today. 83 degrees at 3:00 and 6:00. we'll reach a high of 85 degrees in between. 76 degrees at 9:00 and mostly clear skies overnight tonight. right now it is 78 degrees with a partly to mostly sunny sky. the humidity has increased just a little bit, but you can see it's still comfortable. the dew point of 57 is still in

the comfort zone. it's not until we get into the mid-60s with that dew point that you really start to feel that increase in humidity. right now it's 18 degrees in fredricksburg and tappahannock. 79 in leesburg and gaithersburg. 79 also in frederick. and on satellite and radar, it's because of this area of high pressure which continues to slowly track to the east. that is what's keeping things so nice and pleasant. and a slowly approaching cold front will eventually bring us a chance for some rain. it's going to be a while before that arrives. in the meantime, we continue to have allergy concerns. it's really the only threat to our weather that we have right now is when it's so dry like this, it allows that pollen to accumulate in the air and there's nothing to wash it away. so weed pollen, especially ragweed pollen remains high right now. 9 futurecast looking for any chance for rain. the only potential is once again in the lower shenandoah valley just like the last time that we had this dry pattern. it's really only in the mountainous areas that we have any potential for a spotty

shower. we're going to start out completely dry through the dmv tomorrow morning. there is that threat for a spotty shower to develop. you can see activity starts to head a little further to the north and east. we're starting to drive in a little bit more humidity which will eventually lead to that better potential for a storm. your beach forecast looking great, though. none of that activity is going to approach the delmarva beaches. we're going to reach from the 08 4-7b degree mark -- 80- degree mark on saturday to 85 on sunday. increasing the temperatures a little bit but still very nice and nice here in the dmv today as well. 82 degrees at andrews. 85 in downtown washington. 82 in culpeper and orange. we'll reach a high of the mid- 80s to most of the dmv today and overnight tonight we're going to dip down not quite as cool as it was last night but still pretty comfortable. 58 degrees in frederick. 60 in gaithersburg and manassas with low 66 in downtown washington. it will still be a nice cool, comfortable start to today. then up to 88 degrees on

saturday with that sunshine continuing. a threats for a thunderstorm on sunday with a high of 92 and in the first alert seven-day forecast, we have a heat wave on the way but this is not a bad one. just looking at temperatures in the low 90s with a threat for a thunderstorm monday and tuesday as well. >> thank you, erica. now to campaign 2016. several democratic presidential candidates, including the front runner hillary clinton will address the dnc members at the party's annual summer meetings in minneapolis today. also during today's event party members will consider a resolution honoring president joe biden son -- biden's son bo who passed away earlier this year. joe biden is seriously considering a run for president in 2016. a new poll also shows the vice president is doing better in a matchup against donald trump than clinton, even though he hasn't even officially entered the race. >> if joe biden were on the fence if one were advising him, they would have to look at these numbers and say everybody else is not looking great and
